Romantic Candlelight!

We had no electric all day yesterday! Why? Well they where replacing all the poles and cables along our road.
We where toasty warm though and had plenty of warm drinks and food due to our Rayburn! But when it came to light, well that was one thing the Rayburn could not supply!

Back to the trusty candles, the girls agreed it was fun, I think bearing in mind where we live how fortunate we have been not to have more blackouts! It took me back to all the power cuts we used to have in the 70's!

Then it got us thinking, having watched alot of period dramas, as I do love a 'Period Drama'! Thinking specifically of the BBC's Cranford where they limited themselves to just one candle! How did they sew, or read with just one candle as you can see we lit up our table and although it doesn't look like it, we had a good light to read and playgames by!
It does look so pretty too!

Seamstresses and lace makers had big glass water filled globes, which magnified the light whne placed in front of a candle.

Ah it looks so pretty though - You'll have to learn to knit "by feel" !!!

Fortunately we have a stationery lister engine wired into the mains...so when we have a powercut ours is the only house ablaze with light! LOL! Quite noisy though!

At least you had heat and the ability to cook with the rayburn. If our electric goes out for any length of time in the winter, the furnace doesn't function and the house gets cold. I have 2 natural gas fired fireplaces so we could keep warm but they are not enough to heat the whole house.

Candle light is pretty and relaxing to sit by. Glad you had heat though and a rayburn! Great photos! Candles are not that easy to capture :-)

Firstly - well done you for losing so much weight - I too have been losing the extra Christmas pounds - well the run up to Christmas too pounds it should be - cooking lots of goodies as presents - we just had to sample them.

Love the romantic photos - and the good thing about the Rayburn is that you had always have heat and warmth.

Out home is all electric sadly - and nowhere for a Rayburn or Aga to go. But we do have emergency lighting, that comes on automatically, and we also have a double burner camping cooker too.

I too always wonder how they managed with one candle in bygone times - it wasn't as romantic then as it seems

Wonderful that you had the Raeburn to keep you all warm and toasty! I love candlelight and costume drama's too. Enjoyed Cranford very much, the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility a little less so as I prefer the movie version with Emma Thompson.

Sometimes I light my livingroom with candles only, It's amazing how much light they give and warmth as well.

Have a nice weekend and if you have the time, come and gloat over all the kitties at Bliss.

The candlelight is so pretty, but I'll bet you were glad when the power came back on. It's nice to have the option isn't it. Congratulations on the weight loss, well done.
hugs

It looks so warm and cozy there. Maybe I shall start an candlelight evening once a week here, just for the wonder of it.
